CHICAGO -- The NBA's 2014 free agency season officially began a few hours ago and the Cleveland Cavaliers didn't waste any time securing a deal that will keep their franchise player for many years to come.
According to ESPN, Cavs team owner Dan Gilbert, GM David Griffin and new head coach David Blatt all traveled to Irving's New Jersey home and tendered the 2-time All-Star with a five-year contract extension worth $90 million.
Irving's new deal, which will become official on July 10 when contracts can be signed, will keep him in Cleveland through the 2019-2020 season. "I'm here for the long haul Cleveland!!! And I'm ecstatic,!!!" Irving said in a Tweet.
A product of Duke University, the 6-foot-3, 193-pound Irving won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2012. He is only 22 years young and already has three seasons under his belt. Irving averaged 20.7 points and 6.1 assists per game last season. (Homer D. Sayson)
