ANOTHER INDON BOXER DIES AFTER BRAIN SURGERY

Another Indonesian boxer has died after brain surgery conducted at the Indonesian Christian University Hospital in a Jakarta five days after losing by a sixth round TKO.
The boxer was identified as 27 year old junior lightweight Anis Dwi Mulya. Although Mulya was not knocked down in his fight against Irvan Bone he was reportedly rushed to hospital after complaining of a terrible headache.
A report by Indonesian boxing writer Jeffrey Pamungkas said doctors decided to undertake brain surgery after a CT Scan sowed that Dwi Mulya suffered from both subdural and epidural hematoma.
Subdural hematoma according to Wikipedia “is a form of brain injury in which blood collects between the outer protective covering of the brain and the middle layer of the meninges” or the system of membranes that envelop the central nervous system. Epidural hematoma is a buildup of blood occurring between the brain’s tough outer membrane and the skull.
Pamungkas reported that Dwi Mulaya’s condition “got better, he regained consciousness and even talked with his friends visiting him at the hospital” but that suddenly the thrombocyte level in his blood dropped dramatically.
Dr. Tunggul Marpaung was quoted as saying that they suspect that Swu Mulya’s death was caused by dengue.
The fight report said Dwi Mulya looked fit in the first five rounds until his condition dropped in the middle of the sixth and his hands were down forcing his trainer to as the referee to stop the fight. It was the 28th ring death in Indonesia since 1948 and the first since the death of Fadly Kassim last year.
In 2002 the WBC banned Indonesian boxers from fighting abroad following a number of ring deaths in 2001. The ban was lifted in 2002 on condition that Indonesian boxing authorities put a number of safety measures into operation.
