THE MYSTERY OF PACQUIAO’S CASE AGAINST GOLDEN BOY

Both Manny Pacquiao’s lawyer Franklin “Jing” Gacal and his friend and confidant Rex “Wakee” Salud have claimed that Pacquiao denied filing a case against Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya for allegedly making him sign a seven-fight contract in mid-September “under duress.”

Salud conceded “this is a very big problem” even as he revealed that a Las Vegas lawyer recommended some months ago by Michael Koncz to sort out the legal complications caused by Pacquiao signing two contracts, had reportedly filed the case against De La Hoya forcing the Golden Boy to reluctantly sue Pacquiao in return.

The issue was complicated by the fact that Pacquiao denied filing a case against De La Hoya although there were suspicions that it was the handiwork of Koncz. Gacal told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today “I have asked Koncz to contact the lawyer (previously identified as a certain William Coulthard) and to look into that case that was filed. We will study that after he has been able to get in touch with the lawyer and find out what they have done.”

Gacal declined to make any further comment on the case since he was not aware of what happened. However, Gacal said that technically the lawyer could not file a case without the consent and approval of Pacquiao.

WBC founding secretary general Atty. Rudy Salud said that if the lawyer filed the case without the signature, consent or a power-of-attorney from Pacquiao he would be “in very deep trouble” and could even face disbarment, However, Salud said he didn’t believe the lawyer would file a case without the approval and knowledge of Pacquiao.

Pacquiao also denied a story by boxing writer and Pacquiao’s friend Nick Giongco that he suspected the giant Philippine broadcast network ABS-CBN of having something to do with the move to try and secure an injunction. Giongco quoted Pacquiao as saying “ABS-CBN ang may kagagawan ito” while Arum alleged that because of its failure to obtain the TV rights “ABS-CBN was resorting to tactics to sabotage the promotion.”

Giongco stood pat on his story and said he reported exactly what Pacquiao told him. In fact he claimed to have merely asked Pacquiao for his reaction to the motion for a preliminary injunction and “it was Pacquiao who introduced the issue of ABS-CBN not me” said Giongco.

Solar Sports obtained the rights for the Pacquiao-Solis fight card paying a huge P40 million for the TV rights alone and another P20 million for pay-per-view, cable and other ancillary rights. The fights will be telecast on GMA 7, the arch rival of ABS-CBN with 30 second TV spots reportedy pegged at P2.0 to P2.5 million.

One industry official said "the price which is much more than what sponsors paid for the Erik Morales fights is ridiculously high considering that Pacquiao's opponent (Jorge Solis) is an unknown and there's been so much negative publicity against Pacquiao.
