INJUNCTION DENIED BUT SOLIS IS A NO SHOW

A Las Vegas court has denied the petition of Golden Boy Promotions seeking a preliminary injunction to stop the April 14 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Jorge Solis in which Golden Boy claimed he had the promotional rights for Pacquiao who signed a seven-fight deal in mid-September, two months before he signed a four-year deal with Top Rank.
Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today was informed that the injunction was denied because the court at this point could not determine the rightful promoter. Golden Boy sued Top Rank for “tortuous interference” before a Los Angeles court while Arum asked a Las Vegas court to decide on the conflicting promotional claims.
Pacquiao’s lawyer Franklin “Jing” Gacal welcomed the decision saying “this is good for the Filipino people.” Gacal said he expects an early resolution of the pending cases “because of the nature of the profession of Manny just like the case of Murad Muhammad which was expedited.”
WBC founding secretary general Rudy Salud said the decision may be interpreted by the camp of Arum and Pacquiao as a victory and the Solis fight will go ahead but he predicted that “the coming fights will be a bigger problem.”
PhilBoxing’s Dr. Ed De La Vega reported that “at a much-hyped press conference Solis was a no show” because he was “still at the US Consulate in Guadalajara. Mexico applying for a visa!” De La Vega took those involved in the Top Rank promotion and the Solis people to task saying they should have done better. He also noted that the news conference was held “at a very tiny room” at the Palms Restaurant in West Holywood and indicated the set-up was “a big surprise particularly to the boxing scribes who are used to big hotels for these type of events.”
Pacquiao, as usual, looked very good and confident while celebrated trainer Freddie Roach’s trusted assistant Justin Fortune said Pacquiao was about 75 percent at this time but would be prepared to go twelve rounds by April 14.
Pacquiao himself in a TV interview with the well-known website boxingscene.com said he had a hard time during his three-and-a-half weeks of training in the Philippines because “it was so hot” but he told his fans “don’t worry because I am in shape.” Pacquiao said he sparred 56 rounds at the ABAP gym in General Santos City. Asked whether he had any concerns about the absence of Roach, Pacquiao replied, “we still do what Freddie teach me in the last fight (against Erik Morales) and my assistant coach Justin (Fortune) knows what he’s gonna do.”
Pacquiao said that despite some distractions in the Philippines he was “still focused on my training. I always train every day in the Philippines and I am not worried about my condition.” Pacquiao said he watched a tape of Solis’s last fight in January and described him as “good, tall and not an easy opponent.”
