Golden Boy Promotions is seeking a court injunction to stop the fight between Manny Pacquiao and undefeated but unknown Mexican Jorge Solis in San Antonio, Texas on April 14.

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer in an exclusive overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today also revealed that they were surprised when Pacquiao himself filed a case against Golden Boy Promotions claiming that he signed a seven-fight contract with Oscar De La Hoya in mid-September “under duress.”

Schaefer said De La Hoya was “surprised because he believed one fighter should not sue the other” and that was why Golden Boy didn’t sue Pacquiao as part of their legal battle with Arum. However, Schaefer said that because of the suit filed by Pacquiao, De La Hoya “really had no choice but to sue him as well.” He said the case was still in the courts and may take a few months to resolve.

In the case of the injunction which was filed in Las Vegas to stop the Pacquiao-Solis fight, Schaefer said he expects the court to decide sometime this week. He said Golden Boy basically claimed that Pacquiao was “under promotional contract with us and Golden Boy should be the promoter for this fight.”

In dismissing Pacquiao’s claim of signing under duress, Schaefer said Pacquiao was with his lawyer Franklin “Jing” Gacal when he signed the contract and later was also present when Pacquiao signed another contract with Bob Arum.

Schaefer said “I hope every day, that Manny Pacquiao is going to wake up and and realize you know what, I made a mistake.”

The Golden Boy CEO said that while Pacquiao is “out there” the “Fearless” battle between newly crowned WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and former champion Marco Antonio Barrera was “such an excellent fight” that a rematch in September was “a real possibility.” However, he said that after a big fight like Marquez-Barrera the fighters “like to take some time off and think about what they want to do and we will see what direction the fighters want to take.”

Schaefer said hopefully by then Pacquiao will have “recognized as well the mistakes he made by signing two contracts.“ The Golden Boy CEO said he believes Pacquiao is "beginning to realize already that he could have been in some of these big fights” beginning with Barrera. In fact Golden Boy had obtained the March 18 date from HBO for a planned Pacquiao-Barrera rematch until he decided to sign a four-year contract with Top Rank two months after signing up with Golden Boy.

Arum said he would make the Pacquiao-Barrera fight happen even as he expressed confidence at a Manila news conference that the Barrera-Marquez fight would never take place because Barrera didnt want to fight Marquez and the title fight wouldn’t do well. Not only did Golden Boy stage the fight it was a terrific battle which is already being mentioned as a possible contender for “Fight of the Year” with pay-per-view figures also likely to do well.

Ironically, the news of Golden Boy's seeking a court injunction to stop the Pacquiao-Solis fight came hours before Solar Sports and GMA hosted a news conference at the Diamond Hotel along Roxas Boulevard to confirm last week's reports by Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that the fights would be telecast on GMA 7.

Solar Sports agreed to pay Pacquiao P40 million for the Philippine TV rights in addition to another P20 million for cable, pay-per-view and other ancillary rights which had industry officials wondering how such a huge expense was going to be recoverd. Gacal had said that part of the income would be spent on Pacquiao's electon campaign. Pacquiao has announced he will run against incumbent Darlene Antonino Custodio for the lone congressional seat in South Cotabato.
