After surviving a tough Marcos Maidana last Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the sport of boxing is once again confronted by the elephant in the room.
Mayweather Jr., 37, kept his perfect record intact and unified the welterweight division with an unyielding performance over fellow champ, Maidana. But hours after his Majority Decision triumph, fans are once again talking and asking if he will ever fight Filipino superstar, Manny Pacquiao.
Even ?The Greatest?, Muhammad Ali, is calling for the fight to materialize.
Ali, through his verified Twitter account, posted this message after Mayweather?s win Saturday night.
?Congratulations @FloydMayweather, maybe after you rest up we can see you rumble with @MannyPacquiao! #AliTweet
Talks of Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao facing each other won?t just die down despite numerous roadblocks in the past. After both fighters register their first wins in 2014, the buzz about their mega-fight is once again alive five years after it was initially discussed. And it will continue to do so until both fighters are fighting different foes later this year.
Pacquiao defeated Timothy Bradley last month in an impressive manner to reclaim his WBO welterweight belt and Mayweather Jr. had to battle an early cut and adjust to a very aggressive foe to keep his WBC title and add Maidana?s WBA strap to his waist.
The similarities of Pacquiao?s fighting style to Maidana and Mayweather Jr.?s uncharacteristic performance last Saturday is fueling discussions anew that maybe Pacquiao can be that one guy to give Mayweather Jr. his first defeat.
And with that, the 40 million dollar question (the monetary value Mayweather Jr. once offered Pacquiao) has once again surfaced.
?Will Mayweather vs. Pacquiao happen??
Pacquiao in his personal Facebook account also touched upon on the subject matter, one day after his off-ring rival?s victory.
Without naming anyone in particular, Pacquiao posted Monday morning in the Philippines.
?Maybe one day he will fight with me if the weather is ok but right now the weather is not really good. Hehe.?
Pacquiao did not elaborate further on his post.
