CEBU, ALA-MANDAUE, BAGO AND MAASIN SHINE IN PLDT-ABAP VISAYAS SEMIFINAL BOUTS

The fights were getting intense as the PLDT-ABAP Visayas Area Tournament finished its semifinal bouts yesterday at the Maasin City Gymnasium. Cebu City sent five fighters to the finals as they dominated their respective opponents in the semis. Coached by two time world champion Dodie Boy Penalosa, the former

IBF light-flyweight and flyweight champion, Cebu City exerted their supremacy with the most number of boxers entering the gold medal round scheduled today.Marvin Pomar of Cebu won by split decision over Rimon Rama of ALA-Mandaue in the junior boys pinweight (46 kg.) category. Another Cebuano, Kit Ceron Garces outhustled Evan Maquiling of Southern Leyte by unanimous decision in the junior boys flyweight (50 kg.) division. The third Cebu boxer Junrel Jimenez easily disposed Vincent Tiempo of Southern Leyte by 1st round TKO in the youth boys light-flyweight (49 kg.) category. The fourth Cebu fighter Jeorge Edusma stopped Jeffrey Sala of Southern Leyte also in the first round by TKO in the youth boys bantamweight (56 kg.) level. The fifith Cebu finalist Marco Pomar entered the gold medal fight by virtue of a bye because of the lack of entries in the junior boys light flyweight (48 kg.) category.

ALA-Mandaue, the boxers of the famed ALA Gym of boxing patron Antonio L. Aldeguer, had four boxers in the finals today. ALA's Jeffrey Estella (junior boys bantamweight 54 kg.), Kevin Jake Cataraja (youth boys bantamweight 56 kg.), Vicente Casido (youth boys lightweight 60 kg.) and Kenneth Paul Gentallan (youth boys flyweight 52 kg.) joined today's finalists. Estella crushed Julius Dacapio of Maasin City B by 1st round TKO, cataraja won by walkover over Jason Managbanag of Maasin City A, Casido halted Jovanie Igot of Southern Leyte by 1st round TKO, and Gentallan went directly to the finals because there were few entries in his category.

Bago City had four boxers also going to the finals today with Mario Jaga Jr. in the jnior boys light-bantamweight 52 kg. category, Cresan Paul Diacamos in the youth boys light-flyweight 49 kg. category, Jasfer Montano in the youth boys lightweight and Andrian de la Cruz who automatically entered the finals because of lack of entries in the youth boys light flyweight 49 kg. division. Jaga won over Jumar Aquino of Maasin City B by UD, Diacamos edged Jason Ladrillo of Leyte Sports Academy by split decision, and Montano dominated Richard Dimacutac of Bacolod City by 2nd round TKO.

Host Maasin City sent also four boxers to the gold medal round today with Romie Evale in the junior boys pinweight 46 kg. category, Jeffrey Orello in the junior boys flyweight 50 kg. division, Marlon Samblaceno in the junior boys light-bantamweight 52 kg. level, and Aljun Batistil in the junior boys bantamweight 54 kg. contest. Evale defeated Shaquel Miole of Maasin City B by UD, Orello also won by UD over Leo Domingo Napuli of Maasin City B, Samblaceno prevailed over Jerick Madrazo of Southern Leyte, and Batistil upset Justin Balanos of Bago City by split decision.

Leyte Sports Academy sent one boxer Givanne Argate to the finals. He defeated Monsour Grullo of Maasin City in the semis by unanimous decision in the junior boys light-flyweight category.
