Maasin City played host to the PLDT-ABAP Visayas Area Boxing Tournament 2014 as it formally opened Friday at the City Gym. Affected by the supertyphoon Yolanda and the strong earthquake late last year, not so many Visayas provinces and cities sent boxers to these regional qualifiers for the National Championships.

ABAP Executive Director Ed Picson together with Mrs. Karina Picson, International Technical Official supervised the boxing meet as they graced the opening ceremony together with this writer who welcome all the visitors. Maasin City "rescued" the Visayas Area Tournament from Yolanda-stricken Tacloban City and Leyte Province who were supposed to be the hosts until calamity aborted the holding of the fights there.

Shaquel Miole of Maasin City Team B won over Raymart Alara of Bago City by unanimous decision in the junior boys 46 kg. division. Rimon Rama of ALA-Mandaue outpointed Jerry Pandac of Leyte Sports Academy by UD in the junior boys 46 kg. division . Marvin Pomar of Cebu City prevailed over Mateo Maquiling of Southern Leyte by UD in the junior boys 46 kg. division. Leo Domingo Napuli of Maasin City Team B stopped Edu Kuizon of Southern Leyte by TKO in the 1st round in the junior boys 50 kg. division. Vicente Casido of ALA-Mandaue edged Alemar Javier of Maasin Team A by UD in the youth boys 50 kg. division.

Seven exhibition bouts were also fought for boxers weighing 23 kg. to 41 kg. for those whose weights did not qualify for the regular fights. The minimum weight of 46 kg. was required of boxers competing in the tournament.

The participating teams were Maasin City Team A and Team B, Southern Leyte, Bago City, Bacolod City, Leyte Sports Academy, ALA-Mandaue City, Cebu City, Matalom, Bato, Macrohon, and Tomas Oppus. The former two-time world boxing champion Dodie Boy Penalosa was with the Cebu City team as coach.

Like the National Boxing Championships it hosted last year, the 2014 Visayas Area Championship was smoke-free as Maasin City is a Red Orchids Hall of Fame awardee of the World Health Organization and the Department of Health and the Bloomberg Foundation. We aslo are willing to extend our help for the country to achieve the first Olympic gold through boxing. In so a short period of time, Maasin was well-prepared to accept the challenge of conducting the tourney.
