Gonzalez (R).
Filipino featherweight Ranel Suco was supposed to fly to Mexico last week as the original opponent of Mexican boxer, Oscar Gonzalez (23-3, 14 KO) who passed away Monday afternoon in Mexico after succumbing to injuries he suffered during his bout last Saturday.
Suco, (15-7-2, 6 KO) a 27 year-old fighter now based in Baguio City was slated to face Gonzales in a 12 round contest in Gonzalez? s hometown of Mexico City but he was replaced early last week due to budgetary reasons as per his manager, Brico Santig of Highland Boxing.
?Nag last minute replacement sila, nabitin daw budget,? Santig told Philboxing.com.
(They replaced him in the last minute. There was a shortage in the budget.)
Gonzales who is being promoted by Canelo Promotions of Mexico ended up fighting countryman Jesus Galicia (13-7, 8 KO) of Puebla, Mexico.
Gonzales, a bright prospect at 23 years of age, was the favorite against Galicia and also Suco. He collapsed in the ring in the 10th round after receiving multiple blows in the head during the round. He was pronounced dead after spending two days in a hospital in Mexico City after he was waived from life support as his doctors determined that he was brain dead.
Suco who was sought by Philboxing.com for comments expressed sadness on the fate of his fellow boxer in a brief interview with this writer.
?Siguro iniwas ako ng Panginoon doon kasi may masamang mangyayari o di kaya hindi para sa akin ang laban na iyon Sir. Ikinalulungkot ko po ang nangyari sa kapwa ko boksingero.?
(Maybe God spared me from that fight because something unfortunate was bound to happen or maybe that fight was not meant for me Sir. I am saddened by what happened to a fellow boxer like him.)
Highland Boxing through Santig expressed their condolences to the family of Gonzales who was survived by his wife, parents and siblings.
?Condolence to the family of Gonzales, we know that it is very painful and very sad. Nakikiramay kami sa pamilya ,alam namin na si Gonzales ay nasa langit na at nagpapahinga. Rest in peace from us in Highland Boxing,? Santig expressed.
