The cockiness of WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel who predicted he would knock out Z "The Dream" Gorres in the first round of their scheduled twelve round title fight on Saturday at the Cebu City Sports Center, doesn’t bother Gorres.
The flashy southpaw who is the mandatory challenger said he had seen the Mexican spar and also watched his fight against WBO bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez which Montiel lost and said he was not impressed.
In a long distance telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Tiday while limbering up at the famed Ala Gym of respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer, Gorres said he is in great shape, focused and was confident of giving his patron his first WBO championship belt. Gorres promised "I will get that belt for Sir Ala" as Aldeguer is referred to by his fighters.
In fact, trainer Edito "Ala" Villamor told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that Gorres had told him after watching the fight that he "could beat Montiel. No problem" and expressed the hope that he would get a title shot. Now that he has been given the chance to fight for the title before his hometown fans, Gorres is determined to win.
The flashy southpaw has looked sharp in training and is reportedly in great shape and eager to step into the ring on Saturday. He will meet Montiel for the first time at a big press conference scheduled for Thursday at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu.
Villamor has studied several tapes of Montiel’s fights and believes Gorres knows what to do on fight night.
WBC founding secretary general Rudy Salud who managed Gorres in partnership with Aldeguer until a heart ailment forced him to quit said he liked Gorres from the very first day he watched a fight of his. "He had the skill and also could knock out his opponent" adding that while some fight fans think Gorres doesn't have power Salud disagreed stating "wait till he unleashes it" hopefully on Saturday.
The title fight as well as the main event in which emerging ring sensation Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista battles Latino super bantamweight champion Feider Viloria will be telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN Channel 2 beginning at 9:30 p.m.
ABS-CBN vice president for sports Peter Musgni said the fights will be replayed at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. He said the "Moment of Truth" fight card will also be telecast on The Filipino Channel on a "live" basis in some areas and on a slightly delayed basis in others.
