Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So (ELO 2719) is expected to bounce back by facing GM Loek Van Wely of the Netherlands (2678) in Thursday's ninth round of the super-tough Category A of the 76th Tata Steel Tournament Masters in Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
So, playing white, is in a must win situation against Van Wely for a possible decent finish in the 12 player's field, single round robin tournament. So remains at 4.0 points and was dropped into a tie for 6th to 8th places in the company of Van Wely and GM Pentala Harikrishna of India (2708). He is coming from a loss to GM Leinier Dominguez of Cuba (2754) after 21 moves of Petroff Defense in Tuesday's eight round before taking a break on Wednesday.
Top seed GM Levon Aronian of Armenia (2803) split the point with GM Anish Giri of the Netherlands (2737) after 48 moves of Catalan Opening to raised his total 6.0 points and maintained the lead. GM Sergey Karjakin of Russia (2756) defeated GM Boris Gelfand of Israel (2777) after 60 moves of Sicilian Defense, Najdorf Variation for solo 2nd place with 5.5 points.-Marlon Bernardino-
