The Games and Amusements Board boxing division under Dr. Nasser Cruz has begun to send its representatives to the various gyms to check on whether boxers lined up to see action in forthcoming fight promotions are training diligently.
Dr. Cruz himself goes around at times to check on the fighters in training in an effort to make sure that the boxers are in good shape which often prevents mismatches and ugly fights marred by holding and head-butting.
The move is obviously paying off as the recent fight card put up by the latest boxing fan to promote fights, Jay San Pedro who has also established the Tiger City Gym, proved to be an entertaining and exciting affair. Although some of the fighters didn’t have very impressive records the match-making was excellent and the fighters were obviously fit.
The boxing division chief also said that they have formally written to the WBC Ratings Committee with a copy furnished to secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman as well as the Thai Boxing Commission about the “misrepresentation of boxers which is very rampant now. “ Dr. Cruz pointed out that this creates problems especially for the ratings because boxers who fight under assumed names and lose, hurt the genuine fighters whose names they fake.
There are many Filipino boxers in Thailand who have not be authorized to fight by the GAB but are regularly used by unscrupulous Filipino middlemen in connivance with notorious Thais in clear mismatches and fighting under fake names. It was also noted that some of these fighters change names as they move from one Thai province to another to fight.
Dr. Cruz recalled that there was a similar incident some years ago when a boxer faked his identity and fought in a regional title fight in Japan. The boxing division is now computerizing its boxer’s records including photos so that promoters abroad would be able to discover if there are attempts to fake a boxer’s identity .
