Quillin.
Atlantic City, NJ - Defending WBO Middleweight champion, Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin and challenger, Gabriel Rosado produced a crowd pleasing action fight for the fans that gathered at The Boardwalk Hall Arena in the co-main event of tonight's fight between IBF Light Heavyweight titlist, Bernard Hopkins and challenger Karo Murat.
Quillin 30-0 (22 KO) of Brooklyn, NY, scored with early combinations and a knockdown in the 2nd but that did not deter Rosado from pursuing the champion.
Rosado 21-7 (13 KO) of Philadelphia, bounced back in the fight, when he tagged his foe with a left straight that toppled Quillin to the ropes in the closing seconds of the 4th. He pursued Quillin at the ropes but the bell saved the champion from further punishment.
The challenger continued his success in the next three rounds, aggressively attacking Quillin who is now wary of the dangerous Philly fighter, enabling him to close the early lead of the reigning champion.
But Quillin, was a patient boxer during his opponent's advances, scoring well placed upper cuts and hooks that was successful in stopping Rosado's pursuits. He opened a cut on Rosado's left eye in the 9th which bled profusely as the round ended.
That cut bothered referee Allan Huggins in the 10th and he had Rosado's cut examined by the ringside physicians who deemed that the fighter should not continue because of the severity of the laceration above his eye. This, despite Rosado's pleading and his corner's protests.
Quillin retained his belt via a 10th round TKO at the 40 second mark of the 10th. The decision was not welcomed by the mostly pro-Rosado crowd that trooped here in the arena.
The scores prior to the stoppage were, 89-81,87-83 and 90-80 for Quillin.
In the opener of the Showtime broadcast, unbeaten American heavyweight Deontay Wilder 30-0, (30 KOs) dismantled a game Nicolai Firtha (21-11-1, 8 KOs) in four rounds.
Wilder, who was surprised by Firtha's aggressive nature in the 1st round, maintained his composure, and scored a highlight reel knockout via a big right that wowed the crowd at the arena.
Bothered by Firtha's early onslaught, Wilder waited and timed his shots, knocking his opponent twice in the 2nd before finishing him with a vicious shot at the 1:26 mark of Round 4.
Wilder remained undefeated at 30 wins and an equal amount of knockouts as he starts to make some noise in the silent heavyweight division.
