Celebrated trainer Freddie Roach has offered former world super flyweight champion Gerry Pe?alosa a chance to fight for the WBO super bantamweight title against Daniel Ponce De Leon.
Pe?alosa said that if he accepted the offer, the fight would be on the undercard of the title defense of WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera against IBF featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez.
Ponce De Leon was big for a 122 pound champion while Pe?alosa was a slightly bloated super flyweight who is also 34 years old and the weight difference would prove too much to overcome. Our views were shared by the former manager of Penalosa, WBC founding secretary general Rudy Salud who said Pe?alosa should not take the fight.
The advice to Pe?alosa was to ask Roach to get him any bantamweight, preferably Jhonny Gonzales, the WBO champion, whom Pe?alosa said he was confident of defeating. Gonzales also turned down an initial offer to fight Pe?alosa on the planned World Cup claiming, like Ponce De Leon. That he was the champion and didn’t have to fight in the Philippines and risk being the victim of a hometown decision.
Pe?alosa indicated he will consider the advice given him and after making a final decision with Roach.
