The Philippines and Mexico revived their rivalry in boxing last night in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico with the hometown fighters scoring twin victories against the visiting Filipino pugilists.

Armando Santos (12-37 KOs) of Mexico, City defeated Roilo Golez (14-11-1, 5 KOs) of La Trinidad Benguet, Philippines via Unanimous Decision in their 12 round contest to capture a minor (WBC USNBC) flyweight strap that headlined last night?s card at Lienzo Charro Los Tamaulipecos.

Golez was playful at times during the fight, even requesting a kiss from the ring girl at the beginning of the contest but Santos surprised him with an early onslaught in the 1st. The Mexican stunned Golez in various stages of the fight, pummeling him in the ropes in rounds 1, 6 and 9. Golez was quick to duck and evade some of Santos? punches but touched the canvass in the 9th, prompting the referee to call a knockdown against him.

Santos garnered marks of 116-11, 119-108 and 118-109 in all three judges at ringside against Golez who remained winless in his three tries in Mexico.

In the co-main event of the night, Mateo Handig of Northern, Samar in the Philippines suffered another UD defeat in 12 against Ganigan Lopez of Mexico.

Handig, who now resides and trains in Baguio, City gave a spirited effort in a closer contest than the main event bout. After a slow start, Handig started to give Lopez trouble in the 4th with scoring straight rights and uppercuts. He bloodied his adversary?s nose in the 6th and followed it up with good shots to the head.

Lopez came back in the 7th and scored combinations against Handig who was pressing him continuously in the round. He doubled that effort in the 8th and loaded plenty of punches that Handig had no answer for. But the Filipino returned the favor in the 10th and took advantage of a tiring Lopez who was at the receiving end of hard uppercuts and right hands from Handig.

Lopez finished the last two rounds of the fight strongly against the game Filipino warrior and got the nod from all three officials at ringside with scores of 116-112,118-110 and 116-112. He also won a minor minimum weight (WBC USNBC) title with the victory.
