Pinoy National Master Robert Arellano tops Qatar rapid chess tilt

QATAR-based Filipino Robert Arellano carved his name in history books after topping the Ramadan Rapid Open Chess Tournament 2013 last July 13 to 21 at the Girls Chess Club Abu Hamour in Doha, Qatar.

The former stalwart of University of Sto. Tomas defeated Indian Shatrughan Jha in the seventh and final round.

Arellano's victory over Indian foe earned him perfect 7.0 points, the winner's purse of 3,000 Qatari riyals (about P35,000) and the championship trophy.

?I would like to dedicate my victory to my countrymen. It's an honor to represent our country,? said national master Arellano, an Electrical Engineer currently works at Jones Engineering Group, Estimation Department in Doha, Qatar who just arrived the country for a short vacation.

Arellano, the treasurer of the Filipino Chess Player League-Qatar, an NCFP affiliated chess club also beat Edgar Allan Hoe of the Philippines, Amvar Kassim of India, Ahmed Batah of Syria, Tareg Al Qadi of Egypt, Yasser Alshawaffa of Syria and Ahmed Hamed of Egypt, respectively.

Another Qatar-based Filipino Rolenson Loyola subdued countryman Adamin Hussien Ahmad in the final canto to complete 1-2 finish for the Philippines.

The former mainstay of San Sebastian College-Recoletos tallied 6.0 points to went home the runner-up purse of 2,000 Qatari riyals (about P23,000).

"Our chess players once again proved that the Filipinos are capable of competing against the best and the brightest on the world stage," said National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Pichay, Jr.

Aside from Qatar and the Philippines, other countries which has representatives in the tournament include India, Egypt, Syria, Somalia and Indonesia.-Marlon Bernardino-
