Genesis ?Azukal? Servania who retained his WBO Asia Pacific super bantamweight title with a hard-fought 9th round technical split decision over former world title challenger and current No. 4 ranked Japanese bantamweight Konusuke Tomiyana last Saturday in Macau plans to return to the gym after one week. Tomiyama, a former Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation super flyweight champion and WBA challenger lost in his world title bid against fellow Japanese Nobuo Nashiro who is scheduled to fight Thailand?s Denkaosan Kaovichit for the WBA world Interim title on August 23 in Bangkok.
Trainer Edito ?Ala? Villamor said Servania, who had some ten stitches due to a cut above his left eye which was caused by a head-butt, is likely to visit his family in Bacolod City before returning to the ALA Gym to resume training in his quest for bigger opportunities ahead.
Despite being surprisingly dropped twice in the opening round after sending Tomiyama to the canvas early in the same round, Servania bucked a cut on the right eye in round two to hammer Tomiyama and drop him for the second time in the dying seconds of the third round when the Japanese was saved by the bell.
Villamor told us Servania showed ?tremendous courage and a fighting heart? which also pleased Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who was impressed with Servania?s showing against a tough Japanese in Tomiyama.
Arum told the Manila Standard that Servania ?won a very good fight but made it too close because he was not active enough and let the Japanese take control at some point even though he (Servania) had much more skills than the Japanese fighter.?
