
MAASIN CITY BAGS OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE SOUTHERN LEYTE ANNIVERSARY INVITATIONAL BOXING TOURNAMENT 2013

MAASIN CITY - The third and last day of the Invitational Open Boxing Tournament in connection with the 53rd Southern Leyte Anniversary was held last Thursday at the Capitol Sunken Garden of this capital city. Seven bouts were held for the finals to determine the gold medalists and the overall champion. There were five bouts also in the introductory Engkwentro among boxers not qualified in the invitational tournament proper.
In the Engkwentro, the winners were Erwin Lomot of Tomas Oppus, Joshua Orello of Maasin City, Romeo Evale of Maasin City, Jason Ladrillo of Leyte Sports Academy and Dexter Dagandanan of Baybay City.
In the Open Boxing Invitational Tournament, in the school boys category, Danilo Oja of Matalom defeated David Maquiling of Tomas Oppus, 3-0 at 36 kg; while Milenino Anduyan of Leyte Sports Academy stopped Jerico Patrimonio of Maasin City by TKO in the 3rd round at 42 kg.
In the youth boys category, John Smith Gonzales crushed Arnulfo Hinandoy of Baybay City, 3-0 at 46 kg; Monsour Grullo of Maasin City won by TKO in the 1st round over Wowie Baloga of Baybay City at 45 kg; while Domingo Napuli of Maasin City was another 1st round TKO winner over Lester Buyser of Bato, Leyte at 48 kg.
In the elite boys category, Melvin Tumulak of Camiguin Tiger Boxing Stable injured Jerwin Sumeguin of Leyte Sports Academy with a gash in the eyes for a 2nd round TKO victory at 56 kg; and Daryl Ramos of Maasin City dominated Jerome Panganiban of Leyte Sports Academy by 3-0 unanimous decision in the 60-kg division.
Maasin City bagged the overall championship by winning 3 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronzes. Leyte Sports Academy was second placer with 2 golds, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze. Camiguin Tiger Boxing Stable got third place with 1 gold, and 2 bronzes. Matalom had 1 gold and 1 bronze, Baybay got 2 silvers, Bato and Tomas Oppus garnered 1 silver each, while Tacloban and Alang-Alang brought home 1 bronze apiece.
The Southern Leyte Boxing Invitational was made possible through the sponsorship of the Provincial Government of Southern Leyte through Governor now Congressman-elect Damian Mercado and Congressman now Governor-elect Roger Mercado. The officiating was made possible through the Southern Leyte Boxing Association (SOLBA) led by yours truly. The new national referees and judges of the SOLBA were awarded their certificates signed by ABREJAP president Dante de Castro.
