World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman has issued a statement welcoming Chinese president Xi Jinping and his distinguished wife to Mexico.

The president?s wife is the famous Chinese singer Peng Liyuan, a household name in China. They were married in 1987.

In his welcome statement, Sulaiman also congratulated Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto for his establishment of good relations with China which the WBC president referred to as ?this great country.?

Sulaiman mentioned China as ?the top prospect for boxing? and recalled the WBC breakthrough into China which had its first WBC world champion in Xiong Zhao Zhong who was crowned straw-weight champion last November 24 after beating Mexico?s Javier Martinez Resendiz for the vacant title in what Sulaiman described as ?a historic fight.?

He noted that Zhong will make the first defense of his title against mandatory challenger Denver Cuello of the Philippines on June 28th in Dubai in a fight which will be the first championship bout held in the UAE.
