Top Rank promoter Bob Arum believes a rematch between four division world champion and 2012 ?Fighter of the Year? Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire and two division former world champion Vic Darchinyan of Australia is possible.
Arum made the statement to the Manila Standard after Darchinyan himself in a conversation with the Standard from Sydney, Australia said ?of course I?d love to fight him (Donaire.)?
Darchinyan told us ?we?ll push for it? and suggested that we talk to his manager in the US, Frank Espinoza.
Espinoza earlier agreed with Arum and told boxingscene.com he thinks the fight can be made easily pointing out that both Donaire and Darchinyan are under Top Rank Promotions and ?the timing is right for both of them.?
Arum told us that Top Rank president Todd duBeof will meet with HBO Sports executives in New York tomorrow and that plans are for Donaire to return to the ring either in late October or early November.
However, Darchinyan told us he would like the fight to be held in September but left it up to his manager to negotiate with Top Rank.
Since he lost by a 5th round stoppage to Donaire on July 7, 2007 and in the process lost his IBF and IBO world flyweight titles, Darchinyan has wanted a rematch badly indicating that his loss to Nonito was a shock ?to everyone including me. It?s a loss I badly want to avenge.?
In his last fight Donaire lost his WBO, Ring Magazine and WBC Diamond Belt super bantamweight titles to former Cuban two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux in a stunning upset after which he underwent surgery for a bone spur in his shoulder and two torn ligaments and told us his recovery was going well and he was looking forward to his next fight.
On the other hand in his last fight Darchinyan scored a 4th round TKO over Javier Gallo and said later ?I felt good in there. I got the rust out and now I?m ready for a big fight. Fighting Nonito Donaire would have special significance for me. It?s the rematch I always wanted.?
Darchinyan added ?I know he?s planning to return. I?m here, ready and willing. I want to finally get my revenge.?
