Three hours after Floyd Mayweather Jr. tweeted to the world that he will be facing young and unbeaten Saul Alvarez on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the announcement spread like wildfire in all forms of social media.
And why not, this is the biggest fight there is in the whole of boxing-dom.
It is a fight so big that even casual fans of the sport paid interest to the millions who shared the news on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and the core fans of the sport gave their two cents worth of opinion on what is simply, a mega fight.
With the interest over a Mayweather Jr. versus Manny Pacquiao clash becoming a thing of the past, Alvarez, 22, is the fighter boxing fans want to see and pay as Mayweather Jr.?s next viable foe.
Because he is young and with age on his side against an older opponent, he is blessed with brute strength as shown in his past performances and he is popular, especially in his country of Mexico where he is treated like a heartthrob and a superstar.
Alvarez nicknamed ?Canelo? (Cinnamon in Spanish) may not be in the realm of Pacquiao?s worldwide popularity and boxing resume but he is getting there and a win over the acknowledged best boxer in the planet will bring him there quickly than he and everyone can ever imagine.
The fight will be contested at the super welterweight class, generally at a limit of 154 pounds, but both parties agreed to a catch weight of 152 pounds. Alvarez has two belts of the division (WBA and WBC) in his waist while Mayweather Jr. is the WBA?s Super Champ by virtue of his victory against Miguel Cotto last year, his last foray in the 154 class. He went down in weight to fight and successfully defend his welterweight (147 pounds) title against challenger, Robert Guerrero earlier this month.
It will be carried live via pay per view by network giant Showtime which signed Mayweather Jr. to an exclusive six-fight deal in the beginning of this year. Alvarez which is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions fought his last two fights in the same network; part of a deal between his promoters and Showtime.
Experience versus Age, skill versus power, boxer versus brawler, Mayweather Jr. versus Alvarez? This is what great boxing matches are made of.
Anyone have a towel? I need to wipe this drool off my face as I write this piece.
