Dondon Gesta.
The Fight Game runs in the blood of the Gestas, led by its patriarch Anecito, who is a multi-awarded Muay Thai and Kick-boxing practitioner. His oldest son, Mercito, also engaged in both disciplines in his youth and is now a rated campaigner in the 135 pound (lightweight) division as a boxer.
Younger brother, Anecito ?Dondon? Gesta Jr. is following in their footsteps, especially that of his brother. The 23 year-old is furthering his boxing career in The Land of Milk and Honey, debuting in his first major fight in the States.
Dondon (2-1) will be part of tonight?s card in their adopted city of San Diego, California. He is scheduled to face debuting Kenny McClain of Los Angeles in a 4 round Super Featherweight (130 pound) bout.
The young fighter is excited to step in the ring tonight and compete for the first time in American soil at the popular Del Mar Fairgrounds in Durante Boulevard.
?Napaka-excited ko sa larong ito kasi first time ko dito mag-boxing at hindi ko alam talaga ang mararamdaman ko sa ring,? said Gesta Jr.
(I am very excited about this fight because it is my first time to fight here and I don?t know what to expect when I get in the ring.)
Dondon is being trained by his father Anecito at the CMAC Bid Gym in San Diego and trains alongside brother Mercito, who is also preparing for a fight this summer. He has been working nonstop for more than a month leading to tonight?s fight and is enthusiastic to show his skills in front of his family and friends.
?Opportunity rin ito sa akin kasi yung pangalan ng brother ko ay medyo naka-established na ng kaunti. Kaya kung maganda ang ilalabas ko sa fight na ito, madali na para sa akin ang makilala,? stated Gesta Jr.
(This is a good opportunity for me because my brother has established himself a name and if I do good in this fight, it?ll be easy for me to be recognized.)
Gesta Jr. clocked in at an even 125 pounds yesterday at the weigh-in prior to tonight?s contest. His original opponent McClain failed to show up at Thursday?s mandatory measurements and will be replaced by Pablo Cupul of Mexico (6-11).
