Chito Salud.
PBA Commissioner Chito Salud buoyed by the response of basketball fans who shattered attendance records at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and turned in excellent ratings on television that saw ABC 5 overtake established network giants ABS-CBN and GMA 7 during segments of the Commissioner?s Cup Finals won by Alaska in a three-game sweep of Ginebra, has expressed his gratitude to the public.
Salud conceded that the PBA ?is on the upswing because the fans are taking a second look at what the league offers, which is top-notch sports competition and entertainment and for this renewed fan interest the league is grateful and inspired.?
But the youthful commissioner is not about to rest on the pro league?s new-found success and stresses that ?we have to continue to strive harder to earn the public?s trust and belief that our players and member-teams are genuinely responding to the call for excellence and accountability.?
Salud noted that the PBA?s mission is clear ? ?the fans? interest is paramount and the league must continue to deliver a high-caliber and credible product that meets, if not exceeds, our fans? and stakeholders expectations.?
In Game 3 of the finals a record-shattering crowd of 23,436 paying fans watched at the Smart Araneta Coliseum while thousands were turned away in order to abide by safety regulations. The previous record was 23,108 during the semi finals double header between crowd darlings Ginebra San Miguel and Talk n? Text and the No.2 squad in terms of popularity, San Mig Coffee and eventual champions Alaska.
TV ratings on ABC 5 which has been commended for its excellent coverage, at some points rated higher than ABS-CBN and GMA 7. PBA Media Bureau chief Willie Marcial reported that for Game 2 last Sunday that Nielsen?s Nationwide TV Audience Measurement (NUTAM)registered a rating of 6.4 percent with an audience share of 22.4 percent which he said was ?the best in recent history.?
From 9:30 tp 9:45 p.m. the game rated an average of 9.2 percent as against the 8.6 of ABS-CBN Channel 2 and the 6.6 percent of GMA 7 which translated into 4 million viewers for TV 5, 3.7 million for ABS-CBN and 2.9 million for GMA.
While Game 3 set a new record in crowd attendance it also showed viewership peaking with a high of 4 million during the 4th quarter tuning in. this represented 31.2% audience share for the exciting finish of Game 3 that saw the Alaska Aces sweep the series against Ginebra San Miguel.
