The television ratings of Game 3 of the Commissioner?s Cup Finals between the Alaska Aces and Ginebra San Miguel on ABC 5 which the Aces swept 3-0 was at some points even higher than the ratings of the two top networks ABS-CBN and GMA 7.

As a fundamental principle that the bigger the crowds seen on TV, the higher the ratings was reinforced by the biggest crowd in the history of the Smart Araneta Coliseum of 23,436 paying fans which outdid the previous attendance records set by the UAAP during its famed Ateneo-La Salle rivalry aired on Studio 23.

The biggest crowd ever to witness a sports event at the Araneta, often called the Big Dome and recognized as the ?Mecca of Philippine Sports and Entertainment? was during the inauguration on March 16, 1960 when 36,000 screaming fans watched Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde win the world junior lightweight title from American Harold Gomes with a spectacular 7th round knockout.

During the semi finals double-header last May 8 when Ginebra overcame Talk n? Text and Alaska beat SanMig Coffee the attendance figure was 23,108 which stood as the record until it was shattered in Game 3 of the finals last Wednesday.

PBA Media Bureau chief Willie Marcial reported that for Game 2 last Sunday that Nielsen?s Nationwide TV Audience Measurement (NUTAM) registered a rating of 6.4 percent with an audience share of 22.4 percent which he said was ?the best in recent history.?

From 9:30 tp 9:45 p.m. the game rated an average of 9.2 percent as against the 8.6 of ABS-CBN Channel 2 and the 6.6 percent of GMA 7 which translated into 4 million viewers for TV 5, 3.7 million for ABS-CBN and 2.9 million for GMA.

While Game 3 set a new record in crowd attendance it also showed viewership peaking with a high of 4 million during the 4th quarter tuning in. this represented 31.2% audience share for the exciting finish of Game 3 that saw the Alaska Aces sweep the series against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel with one sizzling end-game run.

Game 3 of the Finals placed 6th as the most-watched show in MEGATAM and tied at 8th in NUTAM of Top15 Evening programs for May 19 based on Nielsen Media Research overnight data.

The peak of four million viewers matched last year?s Commissioner?s Cup Game 7 viewership numbers that saw BMEG Llamados win against the Talk ?N Text Tropang Texters.
