Atlantic City - There was no fitting word to describe Lucas Matthysse's big win against Lamont Peterson tonight in New Jersey.
It was simply an annihilation from the boxer they called "The Machine."
Matthysse (33-2, 32 KOs) from Trelew, Argentina dropped bombs after bombs against a clueless Peterson ( 31-1-1, 16 KOs) who was dropped thrice in the fight beginning in the 2nd round of their junior welterweight drama.
Peterson's game plan to box ended prematurely after tasting Matthysse's much heralded firepower in the early stages of the fight.
The Argentinean hunted and preyed on the American fighter from the opening bell, patiently waiting for his hands to connect against a mobile opponent. His punches came through in the 2nd, landing a hard left hook that dropped Peterson instantly.
Matthysse gobbled on Peterson and tried to finish him but the former held him and survived the round as the crowd at The Boardwalk Hall Arena went crazy after witnessing the action in the ring.
There was more punishment from Matthysse in the succeeding round as the hard punching Argentinean dropped Peterson yet again in the early goings of the 3rd after a good exchange of punches between the two fighters.
Referee Steve Smoger kept a close eye on Peterson but a second knockdown courtesy of a crushing left hook, was enough for him to stop the fight in favor of Matthysse.
The impressive victory just added to Matthysse's reputation as a knockout artist and placed his name as the man to watch in the heavily laden 140 pound class.
ALEXANDER PREVAILS OVER PURDY
In the co-main event of the night, IBF Welterweight champ Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KOs), ruled over Englishman Lee Purdy (20-4-1, 13 KOs) in their welterweight contest.
Alexander,26, was quick and accurate against a bigger Purdy who was intent in throwing occasional right hooks. The native of Colchester, England was in a shell from the opening bell but Alexander penetrated his defense with piercing uppercuts and body shots.
Alexander stated that he hurt his hand in an active first round but did not deter the champ from punishing Purdy. His combinations landed for him and his opponent bore the fruits of his intense work in the middle of their 12 round fight.
Purdy's corner stopped the bout before the start of the 8th round which he protested to no avail. His trainer, Barker cited problems with Purdy's nose and elected that he not continue taking added punishment that would aggravate it.
Alexander wins the fight via a TKO in the 7th because of that.
OTHER NOTES:
Former Manny Pacquiao sparring mate, Shawn Porter dominated fellow unbeaten Phil Lo Greco in a 10 round Junior Middleweight bout.
Porter now 21-0 with 14 KOs was the quicker and more active fighter throughout their fight. His body and head combinations were on the mark against a defensive and slower Lo Greco.
Porter knocked Lo Greco (25-1, 14 KOs) twice in the fight en route to a Unanimous Decision win in all of the cards.
Amir Khan's younger brother, Haroon Khan scored an easy knockout win in the first round of his American debut against hapless Vicente Medellin (0-5) of Riverside, CA.
Khan started fast and dropped Medellin twice in the round and finished his opponent with less than a minute (57 seconds) into the 4 round bantamweight bout.
