NBA -- Knicks finally eliminate resilient Celtics

CHICAGO -- The gallant Boston Celtics, who scratched and clawed their way back from a 3-0 series deficit, finally ran out of fight Friday night and lost Game 6 - 88-80 -- of their best-of-7 series to the New York Knicks at the T.D. Garden in Boston.
The clincher gave the second seeded Knicks their first series win since 2000, when center and New York great Patrick Ewing was still roaming the paint. But it wasn't easy.
Despite trailing 75-49 with 9:49 left in the fourth quarter, the seventh seeded Celtics gave everything they had and went on a 19-0 run that enabled them to cut the deficit to 79-75 with 3:32 left in the fourth quarter. But Boston couldn't sustain the rally as the Knicks countered with an 8-0 spurt to put Game 6 to bed.
Up next for the Knicks is a second round, seven-game series against the third seeded Indiana Pacers, who also advanced after eliminating the Atlanta Hawks in six games following an 81-73 Game 6 victory Saturday night at the Philips Arena.
Carmelo Anthony struggled again, making only seven of 23 shots for 21 points. But New York had four other guys scoring in double figures with Iman Shumpert having 17 and Pablo Prigioni adding 14 courtesy of four 3s. J.R. Smith turned in 13 and point guard Raymond Felton finished with 11 and seven asissts.
Jeff Green had 21 for the Celtics while Paul Pierce missed 14 of 18 field goals for 14 points. Kevin Garnett added 15 and 10 boards for Boston, which made just 24 of 64 shots, including six of 22 from 3-point range. (Homer D. Sayson)
