Middleweight champion Sergio ?Maravilla? Martinez has suffered a fracture in his left hand and was also bothered by an old knee injury when he retained his title in a tough battle with previously undefeated Martin Murray last Saturday.

The WBC reported that Martinez ?suffered a compression fracture on his largest carpal bone of the left hand so he had to go through the medical center, where his arm was placed in a plaster.?

The report said the doctors told him ?to have no activity in the next 45 days while his recovery will last about 2 months.?

Martinez was quoted by the WBC as saying ?An injury is always hard to overcome but I don?t think this means the end of my career. I will have to work very hard to recover.?

The injury was in a different spot from the one where he suffered a fracture in his title defense against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr last September but the injury may sideline the champion for the rest of the year.

WBC executive director Mauricio Sulaiman who was in Argentina told the Manila Standard ?it was a very good fight and he (Martinez) showed the heart of a lion and retained his championship in the last two rounds.?
