Michael Farenas.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum was impressed with the performance of super featherweight Michael Farenas, a prot?g? of former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa who smashed Gerardo Zayas to the canvas three times at the Erwin Center in Austin, Texas to win by 1st round knockout and plans to arrange for a title shot.
Penalosa told the Manila Standard that Farenas dropped Zayas with a wicked left straight three times in round one with the referee not even counting after the third knockdown.
Penalosa said Farenas will remain in the US and train at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach and be ready when a title fight comes along.
Arum told us after Farenas engaged former Cuban Olympic gold medalist Yuriorkis Gamboa in a war for the WBA Interim title last December 8 that he thought Farenas was a courageous fighter and would move forward in his career.
Top Rank matchmaker Brad Goodman has told Penalosa that they are looking at a possible title shot at IBF champion and former Olympian Argenes Mendez of The Dominican Republic who lost a controversial decision in a title fight against Juan Carlos Salgado in Jalisco, Mexico on September 10, 2011 but came back to win the title by a fourth round knockout in Costa Mesa, California in March last year.
A report on the fight said Mendez used his left jab to set up his power shots and caught Salgado with a brutal right hand in nthe first round leaving the Mexican wobbly.
Mendez maintained his momentum in the second and third rounds using flashing combinations before a vicious left hook dropped Salgado for good in round four with referee Wayne Hedgepeth not bothering to count with the fight ending in 35 seconds of the fourth round.
