Danny Garcia.
Brooklyn, NY ? The rivalry between New York and Philadelphia and the bad blood between Danny Garcia and Zab Judah produced an exciting and hotly contested bout tonight at The Barclays Center Arena.
Judah, the hometown fighter welcomed the Philadelphia fighter and WBA, WBC Lightweight Champion, Garcia (25-0, 16 KOs) in his city?s top entertainment venue and both gave the 13,408 fans a fight that they greatly appreciated.
Both fighters started tentatively with Judah (42-7,29 KOs) boxing and moving away from Garcia?s heavy hands. That movement made his opponent missed a lot of shots but Garcia was persistent with his body work against his opponent.
Those body shots were effective for Garcia as Judah winced every time he gets hit in his torso. That opened opportunity upstairs for the champion hitting his challenger with hard rights that moved Judah.
Garcia hurt Judah in the 5th with that right hand which wobbled the hometown fighter and pummeled him in the remainder of the round. He continued to do damage in the 6th and 7th, landing at will against Judah who spun like a top in the ring but still managed to stay afloat. Then a huge right dropped Judah in the 8th round which toppled Judah across the ring but he survived the count and the round.
Judah then came to life in the last three rounds, perhaps from a second wind and from the support of his hometown fans. He landed a series of punches and combinations against the champion and hurt Garcia in Round 10.
A clash of heads in the 11th opened a nasty cut on Garcia?s forehead which Judah capitalized from then on. A bleeding Garcia was getting hit by Judah?s combinations but the young champion never went down and exchanged with his opponent in the final moments of the fight.
Garcia?s early lead and a knockdown on Judah paved the way for his win via the three judges at ringside with scores of 15-112, 114-112, 116-111 for the defending champion.
QUILLIN STOPS GUERRERO
In the co-main feature of the night, Peter ?Kid Chocolate? Quillin (28-0, 20 KOs) stopped challenger Fernando Guerrero (25-1, 19 KOs) in the 7th round of their WBO championship bout.
Quillin started the onslaught against Guerrero in the 2nd, dropping him twice in the round with his strong right hand. The challenger from Salisbury, MD was lucky to have survived the round after that.
Guerrero recovered in the next two rounds. He landed left hooks in the 4th that surprised Quillin. But the champion ended the round with a perfectly timed right that staggered his opponent yet again.
Guerrero again tried in the 6th, landing a series of left hands that bloodied the lips of the champion from New York. Quillin took those blows well and occasionally countered his rampaging foe with uppercuts and hooks. An exchange of punches ensued in the closing seconds of the round which the crowd in the arena applauded.
The champ ended all things in the 7th when he dropped his opponent twice, the second proving to be the final nail on Guerrero?s coffin. A vicious right finished the job for Quillin who was successful in his first defense of his 160 pound title.
