If his schedule permits, Freddie Roach will work the corner of Michael Farenas when he fights this Saturday. If he cannot, his assistant Marvin Somodio will take his place as Farenas? skipper when he steps in the ring of the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
Farenas has been training with Roach and Somodio at the Wild Card Gym since his arrival two weeks ago from the Philippines. The two has been working on improving the boxer?s quickness and techniques in the famed gym in Hollywood.
?We worked on his quickness and his left hand. We taught him how to set his power shots for a knock-out,? Somodio informed Philboxing.
The young trainer from Baguio City said that Farenas was already in his best shape when he arrived at the gym, owing to his two months of training in Manila and that the boxer even made the weight limit for his upcoming bout.
(He has already been training hard in the Philippines. We just did light training when he arrived here. Freddie focused more on techniques and he has been telling me what to do and teach Mike.)
The 28 year old Gubat, Sorsogon fighter has a scheduled 8 round Super Featherweight bout against a new opponent this weekend. He will now face Gerardo Zayas (19-21-2, 11 KOs) of Mexico instead of original opponent, Hardy Paredez.
Somodio will leave with Farenas and his manager, Gerry Penalosa on Thursday afternoon from Los Angeles. The trio will be joined by another assistant coach and cut man, Danny Zavala.
Penalosa is not worried if Roach cannot make the trip and is confident that his ward is in good hands with Somodio and Zavala.
?Okay lang if ever hindi siya puwede, ready naman bata natin at sana maganda ang ipakita,? said Penalosa who will also be giving his ward pointers before the fight and between rounds.
(It is okay if Roach cannot be there, our guy is ready and I hope that he will put up a good showing.)
Saturday?s card is a joint production by Top Rank and former heavyweight champion, George Foreman?s Foreman Promotions. This will be Foreman?s initial venture as a boxing promoter in a company that he founded with his sons.
