Nonito Donaire Jr. expressed gratitude after being named as the top honoree of the 13th Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde Memorial Awards which will be held tonight at the Sofitel Hotel in Manila.

The reigning super bantamweight king and four division champion accepted the award and thanked the Elorde family through a video message that he posted in his website which will be played in tonight?s celebration.

?Nagpapasalamat ako sa inyong lahat na ako ang pinili ninyo to receive this award. Malaking karangalan sa akin ito na ako ang pinili ninyo to receive the Elorde belt.?

(I thanked you all for choosing me to receive this award. This is a big honor for me to receive the Elorde belt.) stated Donaire, who apologized as he was unable to make the trip to Manila owing to his preparations for his upcoming unification match against Guillermo Rigondeaux on April 13th in New York.

Donaire was labeled as a snob by some local sportswriters after failing to attend another awarding ceremony held last week by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA).

Liza Elorde, daughter in law of the great Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde and the tireless brain behind the prestigious ceremony alongside husband Johnny told Philboxing.com that they understand Donaire?s situation.

?Nonito begged off as he is on training now. He will send his message and video(accepting the award.),? Mrs. Elorde relayed to this writer.

?It?s understandable he can?t break camp,? added Mrs. Elorde.

The 30 year old Donaire will be the first recipient of the Flash Elorde Memorial Belt, the highest distinction to be awarded to a Filipino boxing champion by the organization.

?Malaking inspirasyon ito at gagawin ko lahat ng makakaya ko every year and every fight to win each time and to raise our flag.?

(This is a huge inspiration and I will do my best every year and every fight to win each time and to raise our flag.) expressed Donaire, Jr.

The multi-awarded boxer thanked the Elorde family, all local sportswriters and friends back in Manila for their years of support.

?It is an overwhelming award. This is a very prestigious award to me and I am very inspired by having this award.?
