Bornea (R) wins.
Four Filipino boxers have punched their way into the semi finals of the 2013 Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships set for Friday at the Subic Freeport gym.
The only Filipino to lose was bantamweight Jonas Bacho who fell to the resilient Nursuitan Nisanbaev of Uzbekistan in their 56kg quarterfinal fight late Wednesday and lost by a slim 9-8 margin.
The quest for gold will continue through light flyweight Jade Bornea (49kgs), light welterweight Eumir Felix Marcial (64kgs), flyweight Ian Clark Bautista (52kgs), and lightweight James Palicte (60kgs).
Ricky Vargas, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines and of Maynilad Water, says his spirit isn?t dampened by the loss.
The former PBA chairman Vargas and ABAP chairman and a pillar of support to Philippine sports Manny Pangilinan told the Manila Standard they will take a helicopter to Subic over the weekend to watch the competition.
Vargas reflected the general sentiment when he said ?having four of our five boxers in the semis proves our grassroots development program is on the right track.?
AIBA reported that Jade Bornea and Uzbekistan's AIBA Youth World Championships silver medalist Murodjon Akhmadaliyev met in the preliminary round and staged ?not only a world class battle but an early final of the division. Bornea took a 6:2 lead after the first round but Akhamadaliyev was able to renew his tactics in the second frame. The referee counted to both boxers twice in the first six minutes therefore Bornea and Akhmadaliyev were more defensive in the last round. The Filipino golden favorite had some punches which reached the targets and the referee stopped their contest before the final gong.?
Bornea faces Shatlykmyrat Myradov of Tukmenistan for a seat in the finals, Marcial meets Anvar Turamov of Uzbekistan, Bautista takes on Masaya Kobayashi of Japan, and Palicte tangles with Norobal Otgontumuk of Mongolia.
Marcial dominated China?s Wang Qingqui, 19-11; Bautista routed Kazakhstan?s Sagidyk Moldashev, 25-7; and Palicte nipped India?s Nagesh A Kharare, 10-7, in a tough defensive battle.
Myradov advanced by beating Iran?s Houman Taghanihoulari, 22-8; Turamov crushed Kyrgyzstan?s Izatillo Shermakhammadov, 28-9; Kobayashi plastered Turkmenistan?s Yazmyrat Gurbanov, 18-11; and Otgontumuk outclassed North Korea?s Hyok Jang, 22-7.
National coaches Romeo Brin, a three-time Olympian, and SEA Games veteran Elmer Pamisa both expressed confidence the four Filipino fighters under their stewardship will pull through.
Uzbekistan has 7 boxers in the silver medal bout; Kazakhstan has 5, the Philippines, Japan, China India 4; Mongolia and Iran 3; Iraq 2, and Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan, Jordan, Turkmenistan 1 each.
