Schaefer.
Brooklyn, NY ? Golden Boy Promotions? CEO Richard Schaefer revealed his company?s plan of pitting some of the best fighters in the junior welterweight (140 pound) division in a round robin tournament.
?We are looking at potentially doing Lamont Peterson against Lucas Matthyse, and what a terrific match-up that is. You have obviously, Danny Garcia and Zab Judah at 140. We made Josesito Lopez against Marcos Maidana which will be a barnburner. There are so many great match-ups,? Schaefer told the press last night in New York.
Garcia and Judah will clash on April 27th at The Barclays Center for Garcia?s two belts at 140 while Maidana and Lopez is scheduled for June 8th at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
?My plan would be that the winner of Garcia and Judah will fight the winner of Peterson and Matthyse and then the winner of that fight will fight Amir Khan," expressed Schaefer.
Khan was once the unified champion at 140 before being dethroned by Garcia last year. Khan switched camps and trainers after that loss and won his last fight against Carlos Molina under trainer, Virgil Hunter last December. The Bolton, Lancashire fighter will fight former lightweight champ, Julio Diaz in the United Kingdom next month.
?Amir Khan will be fighting on April 27th and then he will be having Ramadan and be back in the fall,? Schaefer said of Khan?s schedule.
?That?s the nice thing too, when you are in those weight classes. Those guys are all open to fighting each other. Everybody wants to fight everybody and that is what it is about,? Schaefer stated.
Schaefer?s plan is attainable and made easier by the fact that his company promotes and co-promotes most of the ranked boxers in the talent laden 140 class.
That?s what we want, the best fight the best. That is what people want to see,? said Schaefer.
