Thailand?s Beijing Olympian Amnat Ruenroeng has won the first IBF Asia flyweight title with an easy twelve round decision over perennial Filipino loser Michael Rodriguez in Ratchaburi, Thailand.
All three Thai judges had Ruenroeng winning handily. Yongsak Na Siongkha and Kriangsak Thonghong turned in identical scorecards of 118-110 while the third judge Somkid Yaloomyath had Ruenroeng ahead 117-111.
With the win, the Thai Olympian improved his unbeaten record to 8-0 while Rodriguez, who is often fed as fodder to Thai fighters, fell to 13-35-1.
Ruenroeng was clearly the more accomplished fighter prompting his promoter Jimmy Chaichotchuang to tell IBF executive Ray Wheatley he thought Ruenroeng was impressive and he is confident he would be a future world champion.
Ruenroeng finished fifth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the light flyweight division where China?s Zou Shiming won the gold medal.
Ruenroeng beat Papua New Guinea?s Jack Willie in his first fight and followed it up with a win over Winston Montero of the Dominican Republic before losing in the quarter finals to Serdamba Purevdorj who eventually won the silver medal.
