WBO/Ring Magazine and WBC Diamond Belt super bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire is looking forward to his unification bout against WBA champion and former Cuban Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux on April 13, probably in New York.
Donaire told the Manila Standard ?while it's going to be Rigondeaux it makes no difference and doesn?t matter who it is? after the Rigondeaux camp brought up an issue with Top Rank Promotions and Vic Darchinyan was being considered as an alternate opponent.
Darchinyan himself said Rigondeaux was not worthy of fighting Donaire and claimed ?The Filipino Flash? would have to buy a pair of roller skates because the Cuban will run throughout the fight.
Donaire himself said ?he?ll probably run since there is nothing else he can do. He can?t fight coming forward? after Rigondeaux was quoted by boxingscene.com saying Donaire "should prepare for whats coming."
The four division world champion said he hasn?t watched any tapes of Rigondeaux?s fights as yet and will have a better idea after he sees his videos.
Donaire said ?we?ll see what he?s going to do and we?ll be ready for whatever he brings.?
The champion said he had started light training this week and indicated ?its been going well? and that he?ll ?pick it up later on.?
Donaire who was named ?Fighter of the Year? by the prestigious Boxing Writers Association of America after earlier been given the same recognition by leading sports organizations such as ESPN, Yahoo Sports, Ring and the widely ready internet site Boxing Scene was also named ?Athlete of the Year? by the Philippine Sportswriters Association along with female world amateur champion boxer Josie Gabuco, the five-peat Ateneo UAAP basketball team and the Big League softball world series winner Team Manila.
