Solar Sports which holds the rights to broadcast FIBA tournaments until December 31, 2015 will handle the television coverage of the FIBA Asia Championships at the Mall of Asia from August 1-11.
Paolo Diaz, Events and Operations Manager of Solar Sports TV networks doused speculations that the coverage would be handled by ABC 5 Sports which covers the PBA Games and is owned by business tycoon and sportsman Manny Pangilinan who is president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas which won the rights to host the tournament where the top three teams will qualify for the World Cup in Brazil in 2015.
Diaz told the Manila Standard ?we will definitely do the coverage? stating that they have High Definition equipment to meet the highest standards required by FIBA.
FIBA-Asia officials, the SBP and Solar are set to meet on Monday to discuss the technical and production side of the games.
Solar Entertainment Corporation expressed their "delight of promoting the development of Philippine basketball by providing the Filipino audience with the best coverage that they deserve."
Solar?s Chief Operating Officer Peter Chanliong said they are that they are "still in the process of talking to several television networks right now to see who among them would be the best choice in terms of being the free tv partner."
The networks being considered are ABC 5 whose sports programs including the PBA are telecast on AKTV IBC 13, the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN which overs the UAAP collegiate games and GMA 7 which is hardly involved in sports coverages.
Chanliong added ?We're looking forward to the games. We hope to make more announcements in the weeks to come."
The Philippines last hosted ? and won ? the championships which was then referred to as the Asian Basketball Confederation Championships in 1973 with a team that included the ?Living Legend? Robert Jaworski, Bogs Adornado, Francis Arnaiz, Mon Fernandez and Abet Guidaben among others and coached by Valentin ?Tito? Eduque.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manuel V. Pangilinan in welcoming the FIBA Asia decision to move the games from Beirut, Lebanon because of the unstable peace and order situation in the middle east said ? Much hard work lies ahead in organizing this event, but we will do our best to make it successful. It is time to unite Philippine basketball to achieve our goal of entering the World Championship in Spain in 2014."
