New York, NY - Undefeated and highly rated Featherweight Miguel Angel "Mikey" Garcia suffered a broken nose after an accidental head butt from reigning WBO titlist, Orlando Salido in their scheduled twelve round title bout.
His corner and physicians at ringside evaluated him at the end of the 8th round after the incident which resulted in the sudden stoppage of the fight.
But, Garcia and his corner need not worry as the 25 year old fighter showed that he is the future of the division by dominating Salido in the previous eight rounds.
Garcia now 31- 0 with 26 knockouts, dropped the champion from Ciudad Obregon, Mexico four times in the fight which served as the main event of Saturday's stacked event at the Theatre of Madison Square Garden.
The first pair of knockdowns came in the opening round after Garcia connected with hooks that floored Salido. It was clear then that the challenger was the better, smarter and faster fighter of the two.
Salido, 32, was down in the canvas again in Rounds 3 and 4 after getting caught by a right uppercut and a partial left hook from Garcia in those two instances.
The Mexican fighter tried to come back with his crowding attack that pinned Garcia to the ropes. He would then unload big looping left hands on his foe who tried to defend those shots.
Salido cannot sustain his attack as Garcia smartly got away from the ropes and brought the fight in the center of the ring. Garcia would then retaliate with fast and accurate combinations that Salido has no answer for.
The shortened fight then went to the judges' scorecards at ringside which was the State rule after a bout ends prematurely. It was no surprise there, as Garcia took all but one of the eight rounds, losing only the 7th in two judges' cards.
Garcia strips Salido of his belt with a Technical Decision scores of 79-70 and 79-69 twice. He won the belt in his 31st fight and remained unbeaten in the process.
Garcia expressed disappointment that the fight had to end early but recognized that the injury he sustained from Salido's head butt is accidental.
But it wasn't all for naught, as he is now a proud champion just like his older brother and trainer, Robert Garcia who hugged him after his victory was announced.
The future indeed looks bright for the newest champ from the Garcia clan.
