ALJOE JARO DETERMINED TO PURSUE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST WBC

Fed up of being given the runaround by the World Boxing Council over its commitment to Silver minimum weight champion Denver Cuello that he would face the winner of the battle for the vacant title last November 24 which was won by China?s Xiong Zhao Zhong, Cuello?s promoter Aljoe Jaro is determined to file a case against the WBC.

The Manila Standard learned that Zhong?s promoter Lu Gang met with American promoter Gary Shaw regarding a voluntary title defense by the Chinese champion which was approved by the WBC board of governors during its December convention in Cancun despite a clear written commitment that Cuello would be given a mandatory shot at the winner.

Because of the pleas of WBC president Jose Sulaiman who wanted to bring China into the mainstream of professional boxing, Aljoe Jaro agreed to step aside for a fee of $25,000.

However, he emphasized that Cuello has waited two years for a title shot and it would be terribly unfair to ask him to step aside once again without even talking to his promoter or making an offer for a step aside fee although there was a report that Cuello would be featured on the planned undercard of Zhong?s title defense.

Jaro told the Manila Standard ?there is nothing we can do so we will prepare the case? stressing that ?we are only seeking justice. They could have spoken to me and explained the situation and offered Cuello a step aside fee but they did not. It's terribly unfair to Cuello who thought that even if he has to wait a few months for a title shot, he would earn something. Its zero and they have just ignored us.?

Aljoe Jaro referred to the historic case when the WBC was ordered by a US Federal Court to pay Graciano Rocchigiani 30 million dollars in damages and to reinstate him as light heavyweight champion after he won the vacant title but was subsequently dropped as champion when Roy Jones Jr who had vacated the title was reinstated as champion.

The decision forced the WBC to announce it would plead bankruptcy even as it spent over a year trying to negotiate a settlement with Rocchigiani who eventually agreed to the pleas of the boxing community and negotiated a settlement in July 2004.
