Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire, who sealed his position as the best super bantamweight in the world with his spectacular 3rd round knockout of Mexican warrior warrior Jorge ?Travieso? Arce is returning to Manila today (Wednesday) for a short vacation with wife Rachel.
The WBO and Ring Magazine champion, who eased the pain of millions of Filipinos over the heartbreaking 6th round knockout of Manny Pacquiao, told the Manila Standard that he has been asking Top Rank promoter Bob Arum to work things out with Golden Boy Promotions and arrange a showdown with WBC champion Abner Mares.
However, Arum is in no hurry to negotiate with bitter rivals Golden Boy Promotions telling us some time ago that Mares? contract runs out soon and he will bide his time until the talented champion is free to negotiate a Donaire fight without Golden Boy Promotions.
Arum also told us that Mares was tied up with Showtime while Donaire is with HBO Sports, the decidedly bigger and more prestigious network and that a fight with Donaire will have to be on HBO.
He said the Showtime deal of Mares will also lapse alongside his Golden Boy contract which would make things easier.
With his demolition of Arce which telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN and The Filipino Channel in the Middle East and Australia will be guest of the network and will appear in a number of its television and radio shows shortly after his arrival.
Donaire, regarded as the heir apparent to Pacquiao and a four division world champion, is in line for the coveted ?Fighter of the Year? award which is likely to be won by ?The Filipino Flash? because of his command performance against Arce while the Knockout of the Year? is expected to be awarded to Juan Manuel Marquez for his crushing 6th round knockout of eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao.
WBO president Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel told us that should the Mares fight not push through Donaire could move up to featherweight and face the winner of the Orlando Salido-Mikey Garcia title fight on January 19 which Valcarcel said could go either way.
