Fight fans around the world who are eager to see a rematch between Filipino national treasure Manny Pacquiao and reigning WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera may never get their wish according to respected Ring Magazine editor -in-chief Nigel Collins.
Collins told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that if the war between Bob Arum?s Top Rank Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya?s Golden Boy Promotions for Pacquiao?s services is not settled ?it could delay or cancel? a rematch with Barrera which
Collins said ?would be a pity.?
Collins said Arum has been talking about a fight in Asia against undefeated Edwin Valero who has a record of 20 knockouts in 20 wins. Arum indicated some time ago that he planned to have Pacquiao fight at the plush new Wynn Hotel & Casino in
Macau and had in fact invited Pacquiao and his close friend and confidant Rex ?Wakee? Salud to attend the opening which Pacquiao skipped saying he wanted to spend time with his family in General Santos City.
However, Collins said such a fight ?looks like a high risk for low reward.? He pointed out that while he hasn?t heard of any pay-per-view figures for Pacquiao-Morales III yet, considering that more than 18,000 fans paid to see the fight at the Thomas & Mack Center compared to less than 10,000 for the Floyd Mayweather-Carlos Baldomir title fight ?it seems to me that Manny should be fighting in the US.?
Well known TV host James ?Smitty? Smith, a former boxer who anchors the show ?In This Corner? where Pacquiao has been featured said ?that?s boxing? in reference to the promotional war between Arum and De La Hoya. Smith said Pacquiao ?looked
very, very good as I expected. He added a few things to his offensive arsenal like a right hook which was incidentally my best shot when I fought even though I was not a southpaw.? The former fighter and popular TV host added that ?there are so
many opportunities for Manny now at his weight or perhaps he can go up a bit but not too much.?
Collins disclosed that Ring Magazine has elevated Pacquiao to No.2 in its pound-for-pound list behind Mayweather following what Collins described as ?his impressive last out of Morales.? He noted that before the fight Pacquiao was No.3 with Winky Wright at No.2. Collins said Ring will run a cover story in its issue which will be on sale in the US on January 2 in which Pacquiao-Morales III will be given major coverage and that the cover story will be that Manny ?is giving Mayweather a very serious challenge for pound-for-pound supremacy.?
