Las Vegas, Nevada - Mexican champion Miguel Angel Vazquez loves the atmosphere of big fights and he wants to keep experiencing it. He also has the goods in the form of the IBF lightweight belt and he wants to keep it in his waist after Saturday night.
And standing on his way is an unbeaten and popular boxer from the Philippines, challenger Mercito Gesta of Mandaue City.
Gesta is bent on stripping Vazquez's belt and his big fight opportunities when they meet at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in two days.
Gesta's manager and trainer Vincent Parra challenged Vazquez today to manly fight with his pupil and not elect to run and box when they finally meet up in the ring this Saturday.
An animated Parra told Vazquez "to bring the fight to them and fight like a Mexican" when the manager-trainer spoke at today's event.
But the calm Vazquez believes that Parra's challenge was a meditated attempt by Team Gesta for him to alter his strategy for the fight.
"When you got fighters that do a lot of talking, that is because they want to get inside your head and they want you to change their game plan. But I am well prepared and focus, psychologically and physically," Vazquez told Philboxing.
Vazquez thinks that Parra was trying to tempt him and his team in fighting their fight, one that would favor Gesta's aggressive style.
"Absolutely, that is what their plan is. Their strategy was to try to get into my head and get me out of control, but it's not going to happen and it did not happen and I am prepared psychologically," affirmed Vazquez.
Vazquez said that his training and preparation for this bout will be enough for him to secure the win and a successful defense of his title. The 25 year old champion sparred with left handed fighters to prepare him against the southpaw Gesta.
"We prepared against a lefty, our last opponent was a left-hander also. We had a great training camp and had a lot of sparring with different types of fighters," said Vazquez.
"We have prepared physically, mentally, psychologically everything. We are ready to win," added the champion.
Miguel Vazquez is confident that he will remain the champion after Saturday and that he will continue his reign as one of the top lightweights in the world.
"I am more than confident, I am positive that I will continue being a champion after Saturday."
