New York, NY ? It was a typical New York night of boxing for Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto here in his home away from home.
The Mecca of boxing, the one that has hosted him for seven successful fights prior to tonight was packed with his adoring fans from The Big Apple and beyond.
They cheered his every move, his every punch that landed and his every successful attempt on his opponent, WBA Super Welterweight Champ, Austin Trout.
But the cheers and chants masked what the judges at ringside thought of the fight, a lopsided win for the defending champion from Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Trout successfully defended his WBA strap with a Unanimous Decision win over his popular and heavily favored counterpart in Cotto.
The champion used effective jabbing against his shorter opponent. He also out landed and outworked him in the full twelve rounds of their fight here at The Madison Square Garden. He controlled the fight effectively, keeping the pursuing Cotto away with his jabs and combinations.
Trout jabbed Cotto, 349 to 175 but connecting only with 46 of it against Cotto?s 29. Trout threw more punches 779 to Cotto?s 628 and landed more with it as well, 238-183. Those were enough to keep Cotto at bay which worked well for the taller champion.
Cotto fought hard and made effective use of his aggressive style when he closed in on Trout. He had Trout on the ropes a number of times and that is where he is effective. Cotto threw 453 power punches against Trout?s 430 but landed lesser than expected. Trout edged him with 192 connected power punches against his 154 and landed convincingly in the latter rounds.
Trout was the better ring tactician tonight. He also was the more accurate puncher against an aggressive challenger. Cotto, during the last three rounds, seemed spent and is seen backpedaling from his challenger in the late rounds.
Trout came to New York as the underdog and remained unbeaten with this victory. He also successfully defended his belt in unfriendly territory with this Unanimous Decision win. It was the one thing that he said he?ll do prior to tonight.
Cotto remained winless for 2012 with this defeat to Trout. He also lost his WBA Super Welterweight belt to Floyd Mayweather last May in Las Vegas.
But more importantly, his winning streak at The Mecca of Boxing and in the city he calls his second home is now gone.
