The much anticipated battle of boxing?s small guys between flyweight champions Brian Viloria 31-3 (18 KOs) and Hernan Marquez 34-2-1 (25 KOs) did not disappoint those that have been waiting to see it.
Viloria opened the action with a huge right hook that dropped Marquez at the end of the initial round of their scheduled 12 round championship bout.
Marquez fought defensively after that, electing to fight from a distance as Viloria jabbed and chased him from rounds two to four. Viloria hurt his foe again in the fourth round when he trapped Marquez in the ropes but the Mexican fighter calmly walks away from it.
And then, Marquez who is nicknamed ?Tyson? after the legendary heavyweight fighter went to work in the fifth round. He stunned Viloria with his combos forcing the Filipino champ to retreat to the ropes. Marquez then unloaded heavily on the defensive Viloria who held and hung on as punches rained on him. Marquez punched Viloria without mercy as the referee watched the action carefully anticipating a stoppage.
But Viloria bounced back and bounced back big time. Another huge right hook that came out of nowhere found its target on the rampaging Marquez, and the Mexican was down again in the canvass.
Marquez beat the mandatory eight count and survived another scare in the exciting bout.
After a slow 6th, Marquez who probably realized that he is way behind in the scorecards after the two knockdowns hunted the slowing Viloria in rounds 7 through 9. The Mexican?s aggressiveness worked for him as he scored with uppercuts and combinations on his backpedalling counterpart. But Viloria withstood the pressure and maintained his composure throughout the ordeal.
Marquez came hard again after the bell in the 10th round. The Mexican warrior charged Viloria with all his might and he successfully hurt his opponent again with that onslaught. Marquez rained combinations on the cowering Viloria who hid behind his guards to defend himself from his foe.
And again, just like in the 5th round, Viloria bounced back and bounced back big again. A brutal left hook came darting from him onto Marquez?s face that toppled the rampaging Mexican back to the canvass.
Marquez beat the count once again but his corner had enough. Trainer Robert Garcia wisely threw in the towel to save his fighter from further punishment.
Viloria retained his WBO flyweight belt with the victory and also added Marquez?s WBA strap to his collection of titles. He improved his record to 32 wins and 19 KOs but most importantly became the unified champ of the 112 pound division.
