The top contenders to WBC super welterweight champion Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez, undefeated Vanes ?The Nightmare? Martirosyan (32-0-1, 20 KO?s) and Erislandy Lara (17-1-1, 14 KO?s) battled to a 9th round technical draw in a title eliminator at the Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, Sunday, Manila Time.
Lara, the Cuban caught Martirosyan from Armenia who is trained by the celebrated Freddie Roach, with two vicious low blows before he clashed heads with Martirosyan causing a nasty gash over his left eye forcing the referee to call a halt and to send the fight to the judges scorecards.
Referee Jay Nady failed to penalize Lara for what was described as debilitating low blows and also directed the judges to score the 9th round even thought it had lasted only 26 seconds once again raising serious questions about ring officials assigned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
The technical draw means Martirosyan who referred to Lara as ?a dirty fighter? would have to go at itb again in order for the winner to get a shot at Alvarez who, in the meantime, would enjoy a respite from facing legitimate challengers.
