The much-awaited showdown between WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13 KOs) and WBA bantamweight super world champion Panama?s Anselmo ?Chemito? Moreno (32-1-1, 12 KOs) will be telecast on the popular weekly boxing show ?Big Time Bakbakan? at 12:00 noon on Sunday over AKTV IBC 13.
The battle between two of the possible future opponents of WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino? Flash Donaire will take place at the Staples Center on Showtime Championship Boxing.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who has what seems like a running feud with Golden Boy Promotions who handle Mares told the Manila Standard recently that Mares? contract will end this year and should he beat Moreno a unification bout with Donaire could possibly take place next year.
Mares and Moreno figured in an open media workout at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles on Monday after which Mares said ?Training camp was great, I added more carbs to my nutrition, we did more sand work, cross training, along with the work in the gym. I feel so energized I am ready.?
Moreno who flew in from his native Panama said ?I feel great. I?ve trained really hard. I know it?s a tough fight. The key to victory is hard work at the gym and I have prepared myself for Abner.?
In what is expected to be an exciting card IBF bantamweight champion Leo ?Terremoto? Santa Cruz (21-0-1, 12 KOs) will defend his title for the second time against Victor Zaleta (20-2-1, 10KOs).
Miguel Maravilla of Fightnews.com quoted Santa Cruz who said ?My training has been going good, I fought in September so my conditioning was already there. I feel strong and ready I am excited to be fighting again, staying active and gaining more exposure.?
Also at Mondays workout was the extremely popular Mexican brawler Alfredo ?El Perro? Angulo (20-2, 17 KOs) and Raul Casarez (19-2, 9 KOs) of Edinburg, Texas, who will square off in a ten round jr. middleweight bout.
Angulo will return to the ring for the first time since his dramatic TKO loss to James Kirkland a year ago as well as overcoming immigration issues outside the ring after being released from the El Centro Immigration Detention Center in which he spent seven months after being found to have an expired working visa.
Angulo said ?It was a tough 7 months away from my family, daughter and fans, something needs to be done about the detention centers operations and conditions.I am really excited to be back in the ring. We had a great preparation for this bout. My new trainer Virgil Hunter has a lot of experience. We have worked well together.?
