WBC super bantamweight champion emeritus Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan wants to show that he's the best fighter in the world at 122 pounds.
The 36 year old Japanese southpaw who comes off a 54 week layoff when he faces WBO/IBC champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash' Donaire at the Homew Depot Center on Sunday morning (Manila Time) told the Manila Standard "I want to show everybody that I am the best in this weight class and that's what I'll show."
Nishioka said he is in "very good condition" adding "I am ready to win of course."
The 36 year old Japanese said his age or the long layoff don't bother him. He said "my only motivation is to fight the best and I wanted this fight against Donaire and that's why I waited."
Nishioka who watched Donaire win the IBF title from South Africa's lanky Jeffrey Mathebula also at the Home Depot Center last July said although Donaire is known as a terrific counter-puncher in the Mathebula fight "he kept coming forward and I learned that he can fight that way also."
Stressing that he wants "to give the fans an exciting fight" Nishioka who conceded that Rafael Marquez over whom he won an impressive twelve round decision was "tough and a difficult fighter" but that against Donaire he is "excited so I don't think about the toughness."
Stating that he's been "looking forward to this fight (against Donaire) since January, Nishioka disclosed that he's "been in the gym since then."
The Japanese champion whose last defeat was eight years ago said Donaire's left hook with which he knocked out IBF/IBO flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan in the 5th round and WBO/IBO bantamweight champion Fernando "Cochulito" Montiel whom he demolished in two rounds is "probably his strongest punch" while stating that in his case, the left straight was the main weapon.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum noted that Nishioka "is a terrific fighter. He hasn't lost a fight for 7 or 8 years. I've seen him fight Rafael Marquez so Donaire is going to have his hands full."
