World Boxing Council Light Flyweight champion Kompayook Pompramook of Thailand who figured in a controversial technical decision win against Jonathan Taconing of the Philippines last May, lost his championship fight and his belt against Adrian Hernandez last night in Mexico.
Pompramook 46-3 (31 KO) was knocked down by the hard hitting Hernandez twice in a fight held at Hernandez?s hometown of Toluca, Mexico, Mexico. Hernandez dropped the Thai fighter first in Round number 3 after landing a series of headshots against the former champion.
Hernandez 24-2-1 (15 KO) tried to finish the tough Pompramook after the Thai fighter got up to beat the count but Pompramook held on as he exchanged shots with the rampaging Mexican. The two fighters traded shots even after the bell was rung after referee Hector Afu failed to stop the fight at the end of the round. Afu gestured that he did not hear the bell sound as the crowd cheered on their hometown fighter during the said exchange.
Pompramook tried to regain the momentum of the fight in the 4th, as he also combined head and body shots against his younger opponent. A momentary break in the action ensued in the said round after the ringside physician had to examine a cut on Hernandez?s left eye after an exchange between the two fighters.
Hernandez who is trained by famed trainer, Nacho Beristain continued his assault on Pompramook even after the cut the 4th. His uppercuts found its mark on his foe which Pompramook has no answer for.
Hernandez who was knocked out by Pompramook last November 23, 2011 in Thailand to lose the same WBC Light Flyweight belt exacted his revenge when he dropped his opponent for the second and last time in the 6th round of the bout.
Two uppercuts from Hernandez landed squarely on Pompramook?s chin which stunned the reigning champion. Hernandez then pounded his opponent?s body with hard hooks and finally dropped him again with a hard right hook to the head.
Pompramook got up to answer the count but Afu halted the fight after that. The time of the stoppage was 23 seconds into the 6th round.
WBC President Jose Sulaiman in an article last week by Ronnie Nathanielsz in the Manila Standard Today promised to give Jonathan Taconing 13-2-1 (10 KO) a shot at the winner of the fight between Hernandez and Pompramook. Taconing expressed through this Philboxing.com scribe that he hopes that the WBC will tap him to fight Hernandez next.
?Sana po ako ang piliin nila na lumaban kay Hernandez.? (I hope they choose me to fight Hernandez.)
Taconing stated that he has a scheduled fight on November 10th in Manila for the WBC Silver International belt against a boxer from Indonesia. A win there will further solidify his chances of him landing another title shot, this time against Hernandez.
?Kapag manalo po ako sa susunod na laban ko, iyan po ang susunod kong paghahandaan, yung title match.? (If I win in my next fight, I will prepare myself for that title match.)
Paghahandaan ko po ng mabuti kung matuloy man yun. Tatalunin ko po si Hernandez.? (I will prepare hard for that fight if ever that happens. I will defeat Hernandez.) Taconing said.
