Aware that so much is at stake when they face each other for the fourth time at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on December 8, "Fighter of the Decade" Manny Pacquiao and Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez have begun training early.
A possible multi-million dollar showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr will hinge on whether Pacquiao can beat Marquez almost as convincingly as Mayweather did in scoring a lopsided twelve round unanimous decision over the Mexican who had to go up in weight to make the fight.
Pacquiao will also have to shut Marquez up over his persistent claims he won their three previous fights but was robbed by the judges even as he requested the Nevada State Athletic Commission to appoint one judge from Mexico, one from the Philippines and a third non-Nevada judge.
Pacquiao who doesn't usually begin training almost ten weeks before a fight was at the gym of longtime friend and amateur boxing guru from General Santos City, Ray Golingan on whose weekly amateur cards Pacquiao fought regularly.
Pacquiao worked on the heavy bag, the speed ball and the punch-mitts with Filipino trainer and childhood Restituto "Buboy" Fernandez and also went through his physical conditioning routine after jogging.
Boxing writer Gabriel Cordero in a report on boxingscene.com said Marquez has started his training camp this week at the Romanza Gym with Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain and his team. His goal to is to have more speed to seek and pursue Pacquiao and win convincingly. Marquez is also looking to send Pacquiao to the canvas at least once during the fight. If he does it will be the first time while Pacquiao, on the other hand, dropped Marquez three times in the opening round of their first fight and once in the second which the Filipino won by a majority decision.
Beristain said ?This time we will work putting much emphasis on speed. We seek to maintain the pace of the fight and see the opportunity to put Pacquiao on the canvas and take advantage of that situation. I know how difficult the fight will be. Pacquiao is a strong fighter.?
Marquez stated, ?I?ll be coming with a lot of preparation and confidence. The goal is to try to win the fight by knockout. Two factors accompany me: Intelligence and the experience.?
