Former WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol was blasted through the ropes and knocked out in the 9th round of his IBF title fight against super flyweight champion Juan Carlos Sanchez in Sinaloa, Mexico, Sunday morning Manila Time.
Mayol started aggressively and gave Sanchez a rough time, determined to wage war in the ring to try and win a second world title.
Manny Pacquiao?s adviser and MP Promotions Michael Koncz who handles Mayol said he was informed by a key official of Fernando Beltran?s Zanfer Promotions, Juan Carlos, that ?it was a tremendous fight."
Koncz said he was told ?it was a very competitive fight in which Mayol dropped the champion in the fifth round in a fight that went back and forth.?
He said Sanchez apparently caught Mayol with some solid shots in the eighth round and that?s what set the stage for the knockout.
Mayol, whose title shot was in jeopardy until the last minute when IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker received the signed contracts on Friday evening in New Jersey, USA, from Zanfer Promotions had Sanchez in trouble in the early rounds and appeared to be ahead on the scorecards of the judges.
However, Sanchez who was biding his time took charge by the seventh round and opened up a cut above the right eyebrow of Mayol with some good shots.
Boxing website reports indicated that Mayol began to fade rapidly and was taking a bad beating in the eighth round before a devastating left-right combination by Sanchez sent the Filipino flying out of the ring and onto the TV commentators table to be counted out by referee Allen Huggins at 2:25 of the ninth round.
However, Koncz said Mayol ?earned a decent payday and we are not done yet. He will take a rest and get back into the gym because he fought a good fight and you must remember he lost to the champion. But Koncz said he would review the tape before they finally decide on what to do in terms of Mayol?s career.
