Newly crowned WBC middleweight champion Sergio ?Maravilla? Martinez of Argentina will undergo surgery in Madrid, Spain next week.

The WBC reported that Martinez who won the title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr who dropped Martinez in the dying moments of the twelfth round but couldn?t finish the job, will undergo surgery on his right knee.

Although Martinez is reported to be ?very optimistic about the time frame of his recovery the WBC said the Argentine southpaw will not fight until 2013.

Martinez was said to have gone to Las Vegas with discomfort in the meniscus which was aggravated during the title fight against Chavez Jr.

The meniscus, according to medical journals, refers to either of two parts of cartilage of the knee which act to disperse the weight of the body and reduce friction during movement. He also fractured his left hand and is sporting a deep cut on his scalp.

Martinez has expressed his willingness to give Chavez Jr a rematch with the Dallas Cowboys Stadium mentioned as a likely venue. It was also mentioned that the Argentine football club River Plate might stage a fight card where Martinez could defend his title in what would be a historic occasion in Argentina.
